The Montreat College Friends of Music is an auxiliary organization of the Montreat College Music program, with a two-fold mission:

• We sponsor performances of fine music on the Montreat College campus for the educational benefit of students and the enjoyment of the local community; and
   
• We provide financial and volunteer support on behalf of the Montreat College Music program.

Sponsored Performances

The Friends of Music sponsors the Chapel Vespers Series. This series consists of approximately one performance per month from September through May in the Chapel of the Prodigal, located at the intersection of Lookout Road and Appalachian Way on the Montreat College campus. Performances are always scheduled for 5:00 p.m. on a Sunday evening. The focus of this series is on performances of sacred or secular music by soloists or small ensembles. Occasionally, a non-music program is also scheduled.

We also sponsor the Showcase Series. This series offers a broader range of performers and could be scheduled for a variety of times during the day or evening throughout the week. Performance venues could include either the Chapel of the Prodigal or Gaither Chapel.

Initiatives in Support of the Montreat College Music Program

The Friends of Music sponsors the Friends of Music Scholarship.

Another important priority for us is to assist the Montreat College Concert Choir. This assistance takes a number of different forms:

• The Montreat College Concert Choir has been invited to perform for one Chapel Vespers program each year. The honorarium paid to the choir helps to fund the annual choir tour and other projects.
   
• Members of the Friends of Music will be assisting in efforts to solicit program advertising and in-kind discounts or donations from businesses.
   
• The Friends of Music will be providing an annual grant to help underwrite the costs of the spring choir tour. We will also be presenting the need for underwriters to our membership, and assisting with efforts to secure corporate or foundation underwriting.

Publications

To keep our members and the local community informed about upcoming events and other news about the Friends of Music and the Montreat College Music program, we publish our Quarter Notes newsletter four times each year. We also produce and distribute schedule cards for the Chapel Vespers series each year. Further publicity about upcoming events is provided by sending out press releases, running ads in local newspapers, distributing posters, and maintaining these Web pages.

Membership in the Friends of Music

The Montreat College Friends of Music is a membership organization. All donors giving amounts of $25 or more annually are acknowledged in all Friends of Music sponsored series programs, in the Quarter Notes newsletter, and on these Web pages. We also occasionally have receptions or other social events, some of which are by invitation for members only. See how to become a member and our different donor levels.
