1The Writing Center: Past and Present

Location

The location of the writing center often reflects its importance to the university. Most institutions that value their writing centers place them in the same locations as other academic services or in locations that are easily accessible to students. Often they are located in or near the library or computer labs. Many are still located in the English department. Unfortunately, some writing centers are located in the basements of dark, unfriendly buildings where students are reluctant to visit. Although poor location often indicates the writing center status, the location can also be a result of the lack of funding. In these instances, the staff faces the challenge of creating the appropriate ambiance with the limited resources available.
