2The Student/Tutor Relationship

  This is a Job!

As a tutor, you have the responsibilities that come with a paid position. Nothing can undermine a writing center more than irresponsible tutors. Students and faculty members are relying on you to staff the writing center; don’t let them down!  Be at work when asked, and be on time. Remain at your position until time to leave. If you cannot report to work when scheduled, be sure to find another tutor (see your Writing Center Director for policies). If you must leave the center for a few minutes, leave a note specifying when you will return.

You will probably do a variety of jobs in addition to tutoring. For many writing centers, documentation is critical, so the Director may ask you to fill out tutor response sheets and to file handouts. You may even be responsible for maintaining books, watering the plants, and keeping the writing center clean.

The most important asset you can bring to the writing center is a good attitude. Remember to treat your fellow students, the faculty, and others with respect. Look for the positives that come with this job; there are many! As a good tutor, you make a difference in the lives of students and in the campus community as a whole.

Key Idea
Don't forget, this job will be invaluable on your resume!
