Resumes and Cover Letters

A basic resume is something that every student should be working on continually so that the resume is in process when a job opportunity arises. Categories that should appear on a college student’s resume are

  • Education
  • Work Experience
  • Honors and Awards
  • Volunteer Activities.

The best way to learn about how to prepare a good resume is to attend a resume workshop sponsored by the career planning office on campus. If the student who comes to the writing center for help has not started a resume, suggest that she go the the career office first.

Actually a resume, as well as every cover letter, should be "slanted" for each specific job a person applies for. The document should probably look generic, but be very pointedly market its creator in a particular situation.

Remember a resume sells a person to a potential employer. One thing that you as a writing center tutor can do is be a non-threatening audience by responding to the writer’s resume and cover letter. Give her feedback on the layout, content, tone, and overall appearance.
