Example Essay Format

This format develops a paper by the use of examples or illustrations. A writer can make any sort of statement about his topic that he wants to, provided the thesis conforms to these criteria:

1. Is a complete statement
2. States an opinion
3. Advances only one idea
4. Is NOT a question
5. Is NOT a fact
6. Is NOT an announcement of the topic

Next, using the keyhole format  (this term was popularized by Sheridan Baker in The Practical Stylist), you can help the writer produce an essay which is developed by several examples (reasons that support the thesis). The essay should have an introduction, a body (in this case multiple paragraphs each with a different point in support of the thesis) and a conclusion. There needs to be careful consideration of the most effective order for the example paragraphs.  Usually the most important reason should be last.

Make sure the essay contains SPECIFIC examples to flesh out the body paragraphs.  A specific example is a particular instance of a general case. The writer may need to write some "stories" (using freewriting) to get the exact incidents on paper that are needed to make the essay “work.”

Possible Topics:

1. "The best laid plans of mice and men gang oft agley…" (Robert Burns)

2. The best classes for college prep students are classes that ________ (the writer fills the blank)

3. Weigh Down Workshop is the best weight control program I know

4. A Christian liberal arts college is one of the best places to explore faith issues

5. Participating in organized athletics helps kids develop character
