The Role of the Tutor

This is the point when many good writing students seek help from writing tutors for one final proofreading. They have finished their papers, they have developed a thesis, and they have addressed organizational matters. Now they need to do some editing work. This often places the tutor in an awkward situation because the Writing Center is not a drop off service, but rather a place where students learn how to edit their own work. And often because it is easier to fix a comma splice than to help a student with organizational problems, tutors  correct the errors for the student. Try to avoid correcting a student’s paper for him. Instead, take the opportunity to teach the student so that he can learn to correct his own work.
