Building Rapport

Obviously, there’s a lot to keep in mind when tutoring the international student! As you begin the actual tutorial, remember that building rapport should be your primary initial focus. Make the ESL student feel comfortable, and keep in mind that lack of understanding does not mean lack of intelligence. Try to help the ESL student overcome cultural barriers by creating a warm and accepting environment. Also be respectful of the student; make every attempt to learn her name and to pronounce it correctly. You may need to reverse roles temporarily, allowing the ESL student to teach you correct pronunciation!
